Where the Wild Things Are

Sat Oct 24, 2009, 2:53 PM
First of all who hasn’t read this book? It’s one of the best. I remember seeing a trailer for this before “How the Grinch Stole Christmas” in theatres, I was very excited but the trailer disappeared and my interest faded. Then I started seeing news about it again and got excited all over again. In fact it was the most anticipated upcoming film (after Tim Burton’s Alice in Wonderland) for me. I saw it a few weeks ago but didn’t post a review because I was still trying to come to my own conclusions on the film.

Well they followed the 9 sentences pretty well but yet made it into a very unique film. Spike Jonze certainly took the advice of the author (“make it dangerous”;) to heart. Some will hate this film and feel like they ruined the book. Others like me feel his was a very special film. The look of the film was great from beginning to end. The Jim Henson Company has made their greatest work with the monsters. The actor who played Max was perfect. The story was grown up and compelling but yet still accessible to the kids. The moral is so simple and told so beautifully. “Children are just as smart as you or I; they just don’t know as many big words.”- Dr. Seuss. This film treats you and the kids with respect and will have you thinking about it for some afterwards. I have the feeling this will be one of those films that gets better after each viewing and I can’t wait until I see it again. It gets a 5 out 5.
